"Big Jim on Benjamin
Pumpers 392 and 397"
By Big Jim |
I've had alot of success
lately with my relatively new Benjamin 392 .22 cal. & wanted to
do a little write-up. It seems like springers get most of the credit
as good hunting rifles, & they are excellent, but the Benjamin/Sheridan
air rifles are more accurate in my opinion & almost as hard-hitting!
I've taken seven squirrels in the past week, all with the 392!.
I started off using the Williams peep sight ($35.00) on the 392, &
it was good, but the real accuracy came with the B-Square Weaver-style
scope mount ($35.00) & the Crossman 4x32mm scope ($34.00). The
Benji is the easiest rifle to sight in with this setup!! With a Benjamin
you can actually "follow through" with your shot because
there's NO RECOIL...not true with springers...no matter how you hold,
you lose your sight picture during the moment of discharge/recoil.
The reach (range) of the Benjamin 392 is impressive! My .22 cal. pellet
of choice is the Gamo Hunter 15.6 gr. (I like the Kodiak 10.6 gr.
for the 397 .177 cal.) because the .22 Kodiak is too heavy at 21 grains.
The 392 also likes Gamo Magnum 16.9 gr. & Daisy "Precision
Max" Wadcutters. Rated at 685 fps, the 392 has plenty of smack
at 30 yards to drop nutters with a single well placed shot. (Put cans
in trees at 25-40 yards & these are perfect targets, close to
squirrel size.)

Hold a Benjamin/Sheridan rifle & you'll know what I'm talking
about!! These rifles JUST FIT!!! The weight, balance & feel is
spot on, and their carbine size makes them compact & potent. I
enclosed a photo of yesterdays a.m. hunt....spotted this buck "grazing
in the grass"...he saw me & went up the nearest pine chattering
hard...as I closed he spotted me again & went for the peak of
the 40 footer. Thanks to Benjis' accuracy, I made a 25 yard offhand
head-shot (check the exit-wound behind the eye) & he fell with
a thud!
I have to plug www.airgunexpress.com, 'cause this place is my source!
They have everything including a wealth of know-how that they share
with every purchase. Get their catalog and/or browse on-line. That's
where I got my 397 & 392 Benjamins, & they're worth every
penny I spent!! SHOOT LOTS!!!!
